FIVETOOLER Jaylen Hernandez Named Big South Freshman Of The Week

Updated: May 16

Charlotte, N.C. –Winthrop infielder Jaylen Hernandez has been named Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Apr. 29-May 5, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Hernandez batted .357 (5-14) with a home run, three doubles, five RBI and one run scored. He had at least one hit in all three games for Winthrop, including his second three-hit career performance in the series opener against Radford. Hernandez opened the week with one hit and one RBI on Tuesday against Wofford. Following two days of postponements over the weekend due to rain, he started the series with the Highlanders going 3-4 with two doubles, a homer and a career-high four RBI on Sunday in an 8-6 victory for the Eagles. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native then tacked on his third double of the week – and fourth extra-base hit total – in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader to close out play.

This is Hernandez's first weekly award of the season and his career and the third time Winthrop has been bestowed with a weekly award by the conference in 2024.
